H2OptiLifeCycle – Test Bench for Maximum Efficiency and Durability

H2OptiLifeCycle – Test Bench for Maximum Efficiency and Durability

With the H2OptiLifeCycle project, we are creating a state-of-the-art test environment to evaluate PEM fuel cell stacks under real-world and extreme operating conditions. The goal is to develop well-founded operational strategies to extend service life – a key factor in the economic scaling of hydrogen technologies for industrial use.


The test bench includes five different fuel cell stacks, each undergoing over 1,000 hours of testing. Dynamic load profiles are simulated, targeted aging tests are conducted, and strategies for efficient stack replacement are developed. Balance-of-plant components – such as cooling systems, pressure regulation, and humidification – are also tested for long-term stability and performance.

The result is a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between all system components – with the objective of making fuel cell systems more robust, durable, and economical across industries.

As part of the “KaLiBer” project, Zeppelin Power Systems is working with Forschungszentrum Jülich (MobiLab), Hydac, and the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT) to develop specialized filtration systems tailored to the needs of fuel cell applications.


By measuring air quality across a variety of environments – from industrial zones and agricultural regions to coastal areas – we gather data to optimize air filters. These filters must not only remove fine particles and pollutants but also meet demanding requirements for vibration resistance, shock protection, and compact design. The result: robust filtration systems that ensure uninterrupted operation of fuel cells on ships, trains, construction sites, or in stationary installations.
