Zeppelin Power Systems proved that green electricity can power the Sandstedter Sommer festival. The company supplied the event with reliable, emission-free electricity over three days, demonstrating how a sustainable, off-grid power supply using green hydrogen can be achieved.
The fuel cell generator used at the festival has a rated output of 50 kVA and was officially inaugurated in May by Hamburg's First Mayor, Dr. Peter Tschentscher. The generator combines a fuel cell with a battery storage system, and it was operated exclusively with green hydrogen from Bremerhaven at the festival. The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems and the experienced supplier HY.City.Bremerhaven provided this hydrogen. HY.City.Bremerhaven also supplies the fuel cell buses in Bremerhaven's local transport system.
"Our system worked without interruption and generated electricity almost silently – a real benefit for organizers and visitors," said Yan-Leon Reineke, Project Engineer at Zeppelin Power Systems.
A Milestone for Climate-Friendly Event Technology
The low noise level and emission-free power generation impressed the organizers and the showmen alike. For the first time, they were able to use an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel generators.
"We want to show that hydrogen is not just a vision for the future, but already part of the solution for avoiding CO₂ today," says Yan-Leon Reineke. "Our generator supplies green electricity – climate-neutral, emission-free, and low-noise."
Emission-free power generation plays a crucial role, especially at festivals and other events with large crowds. It avoids harmful emissions and ensures a pleasant atmosphere without disturbing background noise. The successful real-world deployment at the “Sandstedter Sommer” marks the beginning of Zeppelin Power Systems' plans to provide climate-friendly energy supplies at further events and mobile applications.
Fuel cell technology is central to decarbonizing the energy supply. Unlike conventional generators, which burn fossil fuels and emit CO₂ and other pollutants, fuel cells convert hydrogen directly into electricity and heat without producing emissions. Combining them with green hydrogen from renewable sources creates a completely climate-neutral energy system.
