Under the motto "Power a better world - The journey to a lower carbon future", Zeppelin Power Systems demonstrated at bauma 2025 what the energy systems of the future could look like. The focus was on sustainable drive solutions such as the new Cat C13D, the latest developments in battery and hybrid solutions as well as product enhancements such as the update of the Cat C3.6. Caterpillar's 100th anniversary, which the company is celebrating this year under the theme "The Next 100 Years," rounded out the show.
Six days and around 600,000 visitors from more than 200 countries: bauma 2025 - the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment - lived up to its name as the "heartbeat of the industry". Together with Caterpillar, Zeppelin Power Systems exhibited at bauma and presented sustainable drive solutions and energy systems of the future under the motto "Powering a better world - The journey to a lower carbon future".
The centerpiece of the stand was the Cat C13D - the engine of the future. This new 13-liter diesel engine was unveiled by Zeppelin Power Systems at AGRITECHNICA in November 2023 and differs from its predecessors from the outside: for the first time, the spur gear housing is not mounted at the front as usual, but at the rear. With an output of 40kW per liter, the Cat C13D is the leader in its class, and with an output range of 340-515kW, it combines the power of three engines: the Cat C13B, the Cat C15 and the single-turbo version of the Cat C18. The oil filter, oil cooler and water pump are installed in a "fluid module" for space savings, efficiency and reduced risk of leakage. Oil and filter change intervals can be extended to 1,000 hours, and the use of the latest common rail fuel injection technology, combined with a VTG turbocharger and new software architecture, enables fuel savings of up to 10 percent. Like all engines sold by Zeppelin Power Systems, the Cat C13D is already compatible with alternative fuels such as HVO or biodiesel. It is also a platform for further development towards a hydrogen powered engine. Series production of the Cat C13D is planned for 2026, with orders available as early as fall 2025.
Another highlight was the Series Hybrid Power Expansion Drivetrain, which showcased the latest developments in battery and hybrid solutions. This "drivetrain" demonstrates how Caterpillar's advanced control systems and electric hybrid components can help hydrogenpowered engines improve energy efficiency, performance and fuel economy, and showcases electrification and hybridization as a potential alternative to traditional drive systems. At the heart of the powertrain is a Cat engine that drives a generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. The inverter controls the power distribution and directs the energy from the generator and battery to the electric motors that drive the machine. The combination of motor and battery provides more power than either motor or battery alone. This allows optimized control to distribute power from multiple sources and maximize efficiency. For customers, this means less downtime, improved fuel efficiency and lower total cost of ownership.
The exhibition was rounded off by the update of the Cat C3.6, a compact engine offered in power ratings from 55kW to 106kW and with an exhaust aftertreatment system installed on the engine. The C3.6 is designed to meet the requirements of various industries and applications, such as agriculture, forestry, mining and earthmoving.
The show was also themed "The Next 100 Years" as Caterpillar celebrates its 100th anniversary. "The partnership with Caterpillar is key to our success. We are two companies, but together we offer our customers a powerful solution such as the Cat C13D," said Jonny AlSaiegh, Technical Director Industry at Zeppelin Power Systems. "We are therefore delighted to have this strong partner by our side and to celebrate this anniversary with them.
