InnoTrans 2018: Zeppelin Power Systems presents drive trains for dual-power use
At this year's InnoTrans Zeppelin Power Systems focuses on the new Cat EU Stage V engines as well as on drive trains for dual-power use. The company has designed these drive trains in collaboration with the French manufacturer Alstom for the new Prima H4 dual-mode locomotive. The dual-drive mode facilitates both diesel-electric operation and a purely electrical drive system using the overhead contact line. In 2016, Zeppelin Power Systems signed a contract with Alstom at Innotrans including the supply of 94 drive trains for 47 Prima H4 locomotives for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). So far, ten units for five locomotives are supplied in time and the drive trains are ready for series production. By the end of 2021, all of the 94 drive trains are supposed to be delivered. Each of them contains a Cat C18 diesel engine with a capacity of 522 kW including a cooling system, preheating systems and a traction generator. The engines comply with the EU IIIB F-Cycle with wall-flow diesel particulate filter system (DPF). Even though the drive trains were especially designed for the Prima H4 locomotives in collaboration with Alstom, Zeppelin Power Systems can adapt and offer the system for other newbuilds or remotorizations of different exhaust emission levels. New Engines and Extensive Service
The experts from Zeppelin Power Systems will also be providing information about the new Cat engine 3512E at InnoTrans. This engine is available with nominal outputs of 1,600 and 1,800 kW. It is certified for the currently valid EU Stage IIIB (F cycle/locomotives). The engine has been designed to also fulfill the requirements of the forthcoming EU Stage V. In addition, the new Cat engine C9.3B with improved performance and innovative after-treatment of exhaust gases will be in place as an exclusive exhibit. It already fulfills the EU emissions class V which will apply for mobile machines from 2019, and is therefore ideally equipped for future use in all rail vehicles. Other topics to be covered are engine-transmission units, the entire portfolio of engines – from the Cat C4.4 to the Cat 3516C HD – as well as the extensive service that many customers from the rail vehicles sector rely on. This also includes the new repair options for Cat engines, which Zeppelin Power Systems will be providing information about at InnoTrans.
The drive specialist has a central service competence center at its Lippstadt site with its own rail connection. This location is where Zeppelin Power Systems quickly and cost-effectively performs all required maintenance, repair and installation work on locomotives in collaboration with Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn (WLE). Customers are provided with a single point of contact for all the spare parts and services necessary for their rail vehicle, saving them both time and money.
