MaK History
The history of MaK-engines goes back to the year 1886 when the imperial navy of the time founded an artillery depot in Kiel. In 1919/20 this became a part of the Deutsche Werke Berlin, from which "MaK-Maschinenbau“ emerged in 1954. In 1957, an independent sales and service organization was created, at first in Hamburg and then in Bremen, under the name of MaK and developed rapidly due to its good performance. The parent company, MaK in Kiel, was bought by the Krupp Group in1964 and then in turn, the company which had been radically restructured in1990/93, was sold to Caterpillar Inc. in 1997. From August 2000 MaK Germany then worked as a division of Caterpillar Motoren, Kiel, and from January 2002 as an independent firm (MaK Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG) with Cat Motoren, Kiel, and the Zeppelin Group, Garching near Munich, as shareholders. One year later the Zeppelin Group also took over the shares held by Cat Motoren. This made MaK Germany a fully owned subsidiary of Zeppelin.
Following significant expansion of the engine business, with effect from 1st January 2007 the Zeppelin group has combined all the engine activities hitherto managed by MaK Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and the Zeppelin Power Systems division of Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH to form a new company. The new company, called Zeppelin Power Systems GmbH & Co. KG and based in Hamburg, combines all the sales and service activities for MaK marine engines and Caterpillar marine engines, locomotive engines, built-in motors, block thermal power stations and generator sets.
